The Herbert Protocol: Safeguarding those living with dementia

The Herbert Protocol is an initiative for missing people living with dementia. It is intended to speed up and simplify the response of the Police and other agencies when an individual is reported missing, ensuring that the right information is readily available so that the search can be targeted appropriately.

The Protocol is named after George Herbert, a decorated war veteran of the Normandy landings who was living with dementia. George continually went missing from his care home and the police would have to find him. Norfolk Constabulary developed the protocol to help people living with dementia who had gone missing to get back to a place of safety as quickly as possible. The protocol originally focused on people in care homes, but in 2015 it was extended to include individuals living in their own home with dementia.

Safe and Found Online

Historically, people have been able to complete a paper document with key information about the person living with dementia that is given to the police in the event they go missing.  Since 2023 West Yorkshire Police have been working with Safe and Found Online.

Safe and Found Online is a digital platform where you can register a secure profile and store key information without the need to complete a paper document. Just like any social media profile you can also attach photos and documents, making as many changes as you like. The details are only ever accessed by the police in the event that person is reported missing.

Carers, family members and friends of someone living with dementia can complete, in advance, an online form recording all vital details, such as medication required, mobile numbers, places previously located, a photograph etc.

In the event of the person living with dementia going missing, the information can be easily be accessed by the police to reduce the time taken in gathering this information. The information can be regularly updated and made accessible to control room screens and officers without delay.
