Tackling Poor Health Literacy: Free Training

Thursday 28 August 2025, 1:00 – 4:00pm (Online)

Around 43% of adults in the UK struggle to understand written health information. That figure rises to 61% when numbers are involved. This can seriously impact how people manage their health, access services, or make informed decisions about care.

This free online training, delivered by SMG Learning in partnership with the School of Public Health, explores how low health literacy contributes to health inequalities — and what we can do about it.

What you’ll learn:

  • How poor health literacy impacts patient care and health inequalities

  • Techniques to improve understanding of written and verbal information

  • Practical tools to support decision-making and patient empowerment

  • Strategies for clear, accessible communication

  • Case studies and examples you can apply in your role

  • A reference sheet to use in everyday consultations

Who is it for?

This course is ideal for anyone supporting the public with illness, injury or lifestyle changes — including:

  • VCSE workers and volunteers

  • Health educators

  • Social workers

  • GPs, nurses and reception staff

  • Anyone working in health and care settings

Why take part?

This is a pilot session, so your feedback is welcome and will help shape future training. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on your communication practice and improve outcomes for the people you work with.
