Research Study | Safe with AI at Home co-design workshops

Alicia Ridout, a PhD student at York St John University is hosting two in-person workshops for 8 – 12 participants. They will aim to assess the benefits and risks of using smart home technology equipped with AI and IoT (Internet of Things) for older adults who may access occupational therapy services.

Study Purpose and Goals:

– The study seeks to enhance discussions about safety in smart home tech used by older adults.
– The focus is on creating tools that help occupational therapists and older adults navigate the safety of AI and IoT devices, which might be integrated into health or social care settings.

Participant Eligibility:

– The research seeks 8-12 participants over two in-person workshops in Leeds, on December 12, 2024, and January 9, 2025.
– Eligible participants should use smart devices and consider or be in adult social care.

Workshop Format:

– Sessions will involve group discussions, facilitated by experts, and will use short films to spark conversation.
– No recording of participants will be done; only paper notes and anonymised summaries will be created.

Participant Support:

– Participation is voluntary, with the option to opt out at any stage. The study will offer travel reimbursements, refreshments, and a £25 voucher for each session.

This study supports developing safer, user-focused digital health solutions tailored to the needs and safety concerns of older adults.
