The Future of Healthy Housing
Healthy Housing Initiative and Leadership Forum Launch
The University of Huddersfield recently hosted the launch of the Healthy Housing Initiative and Leadership Forum – a new national partnership designed to put health at the heart of housing policy and practice.
For too long, the link between poor housing and poor health has been overlooked. Cold, damp and overcrowded homes contribute to respiratory illness, accidents, stress and poor mental health. They also add significant pressure to the NHS and social care. Across the UK, it is estimated that one in five homes fail to meet basic health and safety standards. In communities already experiencing health inequalities, the impact is stark.
The Healthy Housing Initiative brings together academics, health leaders, housing associations, community groups and local authorities to drive real change. Its aim is to build strong leadership and research partnerships that can influence national policy while also supporting local innovation. The new Leadership Forum will act as a platform for learning, testing new approaches, and amplifying community voices to ensure that healthy housing is seen as a public health priority.
Speakers at the launch highlighted the importance of collaboration – recognising that housing cannot be improved in isolation. By working together across sectors, we can tackle the root causes of health inequalities. Examples shared included innovative retrofitting programmes, community-based design projects, and new funding models to make housing improvement financially viable at scale.
For the VCSE sector, this initiative is a chance to ensure that the lived experiences of communities are heard in national debates. Local charities, grassroots groups and health advocates are often the first to hear about the impact of poor housing on people’s daily lives. Their input will be critical in shaping solutions that are both practical and equitable.
Over the coming months, the Forum will continue to gather insight and drive forward projects that align housing and health priorities. By strengthening leadership in this space, we can work towards a future where everyone has access to safe, warm and healthy homes – and where no one’s health is put at risk by the place they live.
