Community Led Housing Conference

Building Stronger Communities through Housing

This September, partners from across Leeds and West Yorkshire will come together for the Community Led Housing Conference – a landmark event exploring how local people can take the lead in shaping the homes and neighbourhoods they live in.

Community led housing (CLH) is about much more than bricks and mortar. It’s about putting residents at the centre of decision-making, empowering them to influence the type of homes being built and ensuring that these homes meet the real needs of local people. From co-operatives and community land trusts, to self-build projects and locally managed housing associations, CLH can help deliver affordable, sustainable, and inclusive housing in areas that need it most.

The conference will bring together a wide range of voices: community organisations already delivering housing projects, local authorities exploring new models, housing providers seeking to innovate, and health and care partners who understand how the quality of housing directly affects health outcomes. Through panel discussions, workshops and networking, participants will share good practice, highlight challenges, and explore how we can collectively unlock more opportunities for CLH across our region.

For the voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) sector, this is a valuable opportunity to get involved in the housing conversation. We know that the cost-of-living crisis and rising rents are pushing many people into insecure housing situations. We also know that cold, damp and unsafe homes contribute directly to poor health outcomes, widening existing inequalities. Community led approaches offer practical solutions – led by local knowledge, rooted in fairness, and focused on building stronger, more resilient communities.

We’ll be sharing updates from the event and case studies of community led housing in action. Together, we can demonstrate how housing shaped by residents themselves can play a vital role in tackling poverty, improving health and wellbeing, and building neighbourhoods where people can thrive.
