FORALL study and peer researcher opportunities

FORALL is a research project, hosted by the University of Leeds and University of Hull, exploring ways to develop healthy living and weight management support for underserved women living with and beyond breast cancer.

Purpose of the research

Weight management is an important factor in cancer treatment, recovery, and overall health, so it’s important that support is available for everyone. Research doesn’t typically engage women from underserved communities. ‘Underserved’ women refers to women who are often not
represented in research and/or services. Therefore, FORALL wants to engage underserved women in research, to consider how weight management support can be inclusive.

There are several opportunities available to get involved with FORALL.

Opportunities

Women with a lived experience of breast cancer: interview/group discussion

We are looking for women who:

  • are aged 18 or over
  • are South Asian, Black African or Black Caribbean, or live on a low income
  • have a lived experience of breast cancer (diagnosed in the last 5 years)
  • completed surgery, and if applicable chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy
  • have experience with or interest in weight management

In the interview or group discussion (it is up to you which you would prefer), you will spend approximately 60 minutes talking to a researcher about your experiences of weight management and lifestyle since a breast cancer diagnosis/treatment. This can be on the phone, on a video call (e.g. on Microsoft Teams or Zoom) or face-to-face at a place and time convenient for you. You will receive a £25 gift voucher for your time.

Peer researcher

We are looking for women who:

  • are aged 18 or over
  • are South Asian, Black African or Black Caribbean, or live on a low income
  • can travel to and from Leeds and Hull, and surrounding areas

Women may also:

  • speak an additional language(s)
  • have a previous diagnosis of breast cancer, or have a family member or close
friend with a previous diagnosis of breast cancer

As a peer researcher, you will work with the research team to share research opportunities with communities and consider ways to engage underserved communities in FORALL. This may include sharing recruitment materials with people you know and attending meeting with community organisations. You will also work alongside FORALL researchers to support or lead interviews or group discussions with underserved women. You may support the research team to look at the interview findings and explore and agree on key themes coming out of the interviews. You may work with the research team to consider the best ways to communicate and share
these findings to the public and relevant communities.

You will be paid £15 per hour for your time and travel expenses will be reimbursed.

Community service providers: interview

We are looking for people who work or volunteer with an organisation or charity that
supports:

  • women on low incomes, or from South Asian, Black African or Black Caribbean
    backgrounds
  • (optional) women living with or beyond breast cancer

In the interview, you will spend approximately 60 minutes talking to a researcher about your experiences supporting these women, particularly focusing on the topic of weight management. This can be on the phone, on a video call (e.g. on Microsoft Teams or Zoom) or face-to-
face at a place and time convenient for you.

You will receive a £25 gift voucher for your time.
